Transformation:Change in form, appearance, nature, or character.

One of the ways we look to help those who suffer the effects of homelessness is by providing opportunities for creativity that develop confidence and self esteem. Alongside this, we also run two stores selling recycled furniture, which provide employment opportunities and are making a significant dent in the huge problem that is landfill. Now we have combined all of these ingredients and have begun a brand new initiative called Shabby Chic.

Calling on the expertise of an artist, this creative workshop takes old pieces of furniture in need of renovation, and transforms them into something altogether different and not just in appearance. The challenge is to take, say, an ordinary wooden kitchen chair, or an old TV and think “outside the box”. It’s a way of capturing the imagination and flair of those who have not had the opportunity to express themselves in this way before.

Turning something that would appear to have no future purpose, or is damaged,  mistreated or in need of care into something that is fresh, vibrant, purposeful, and  beautiful is not only a clear metaphor for the work we do with our residents, but it is also a creative and purposeful activity in its own right, producing original and exciting pieces.
